BANGKOK, Thailand – A Thai court handed down the death penalty today to Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, the woman notorious as “Am Cyanide,” convicting her of murdering Chantarat Wongkraisin with cyanide in 2022. The Criminal Court found that Rangsiwuthaporn bought the poison on 9 August 2022 and arranged to meet Chantarat at a Phetchaburi gas station on 15 August, ostensibly to repay invested money with interest.

At the meeting, the court said, she handed Chantarat the cyanide while claiming it was medicine for COVID-19 symptoms. The two separated, and Chantarat was later found dead at home, with a forensic pathologist concluding her body had run out of oxygen.

Telephone records and money transfer slips helped seal the case, and the court ruled the evidence proved Rangsiwuthaporn’s intent beyond doubt.

Her lawyer said the verdict will be appealed to a higher court. Rangsiwuthaporn faces allegations of 14 murders and one attempted murder over several years, most of her victims killed by cyanide poisoning, in a case that has captivated the country since her arrest.
